I do think that the development of the WIMP/GUI is the reason computers are so popular today. If you think about every single person you know, nearly all of them own a computer, whether its a family computer, or personal. Computers are not only used for school or business, but also entertainment. Computers are very entertaining. With a computer’s endless boundaries for entertainment, it can be used for almost anything; mainly because they are designed to be user-friendly. If computers were still text-based and known for command line functionality, they would not be near as popular. Understanding the logistics behind a computer can be extremely confusing; thus, without WIMP/GUI, computers would never be successful. I feel the only people who would use a computer would be programmers/developers, and analysts. A computer would more than likely just be used to store and look up crucial data. I could see the Government playing a major role in computers with a main focus of communication. The basic structure of a computer would probably be the same, just more of a UNIX interface; all command line and code.
